To bond with dogs old and new, attach an 6 foot lead to the dogs bucket collar and the other end to your waist.  As  you do house work or things around the house, have the dog attached to you for 10 minutes a couple of times a day.  During this time, don't really give your dogs commands or name recalls, rather work on the dog connecting to watching and following you.  The point of the exercise is having the dog become more attentive and less distracted by other things other than you during these short training times.   To reinforce the dog's recall "come" commands, play with the dog off leash in the yard or other secure area.  Treats and/or play reward for coming when called will be the dog's best reward, reinforcing the attentiveness you would probably like to see in you dog.  Remember having a pet is all about "me and the dog".

What advantages does this exercise give us:

  1. Attentiveness and focus
  2. Behavior modification with the house tour while doing the bonding exercise
  3. Trust:  potty-accident free house hold, and better recall
  4. Alertness: from both ends of the leash
  5. Companionship and bonding time with your dog.

Reestablishing leadership and household management:

For the trained dog that has a naughty streak, reestablish the household hierarchy.  Perform the exercise above for a couple of weeks, except let the dog drag a leash with supervision during the hectic moments in the house or for 10 minutes.  During this reconditioning, don't let the dog on furniture without permission (or not at all), especially in locations that would put the dogs height high up over things.  Feed the dog by hand using command and training exercises to make is eating time fun. Reestablishing your household rules gently and discreetly will make the management happen with cooperation.  A set routine for activity like something as simple as walking the dog, will be helpful, rewarding and lots of fun.
